What We Do

Western Community Policing Institute (WCPI) was established in 1996 as one of the national networks of Regional Community Policing Institutes (RCPI). Funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office of Grants and Training (DHS) and U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing (COPS), WCPI provides nationwide training and technical support on issues vital to community safety. With over 75 years of combined experience, WCPI employs highly qualified full-time staff with extensive educational and professional public safety backgrounds.

As threats of terrorism increase and evolve and significant natural and man-made disasters continue to threaten our communities, the need to approach homeland security by improving the capabilities and collaboration of public safety personnel, governmental and non-governmental organizations, school and post-secondary education officials, medical professionals, tribal leaders, and community members, becomes increasingly evident. To respond to this need, WCPI was awarded a grant in 2004 from DHS to develop a community-outreach approach to homeland security trainings that focuses on collaboration and the best efforts of the whole community, including the public and private sector.

In response, WCPI has subsequently developed four certified homeland security training courses: Creating Vigilant, Prepared, and Resilient Communities for Homeland Security: An all-hazards community approach to events of national significance (#AWR182); The Leader's Role in Creating Vigilant, Prepared, and Resilient Communities (#AWR196); Regional Collaboration & Tribal Partnerships (#AWR145); and Scenario Based Executive Level Training (#AWR201). WCPI is pleased to announce our newest training programs currently under development: Tribal Youth Leadership (TYL), Tribal Inspired Leadership Training (TILT), and Regional Collaboration & Tribal Partnership Strategies (RCTPS).
